The Island of Evia - A Greek Holiday

Day 3 ... Aghious Dimitrious Gorge

West Essex Ramblers walked this on Friday, 29th April 2011

I believe we started from Aghious Dimitrious although the river (and gorge?) starts much earlier.

The gorge is deep and steep and our path was half way up the side, but we were rarely too near the edge. When returning by coach, taking the road on the opposite side of the gorge, the path didn't look possible! It was very beautiful with a number of streams to cross - some photos, perhaps, over dramatise the dangers.

Cliff!

Cliff! - Looked like the path near the top

OK, we were near the edge here, but it seemed quite safe. On a windy or very wet day it would need either extreme caution or would have to be postponed. I think the first break was just to admire the view and the next one was lunch.

Cliff and Sea - Probably the nearest we came to the edge

Over 20-30 ft it went from safe, to dodgy, to safe again

Fungus

Coprinus Comatus (coma means hair)

Not many flowers up here although there was a fungus. We walked to the sea then onto the beach - I think someone had a dip. Afterwards, we walked by the river, removed boots to ford it (some had beach footwear with them) then climbed the track to the road. We passed a horse and some goats as we walked, up the hill, to the coach.
