Coach Trip Programme

Provisional coach outings are summarised in the first table. Details will be shown in the second table when known.

All coach outings must be booked in advance. This website does not necessary keep up to date with seat availability.

Late bookings are sometimes available, but it is best to book early to avoid disappointment.

Please do not change your pick-up point without telling the organiser. This will save the leader waiting for you, thinking you are late.

If you need to cancel, please let John Francis know (020 8527 3938), giving as much notice as possible.

Coach Outing to Suffolk – Woodbridge and the Tidemill and Sutton Hoo

Woodbridge was a port with an important ship-building industry, attractively situated on the River Deben.

It also contains several buildings of historic interest including the Tidemill, a rarity, which was saved from dereliction and extensively restored in the late 1960s and more recently to working condition. Sutton Hoo is the site of discovery of another rarity: a Saxon Ship found in one of a series of burial mounds containing a unique collection of artefacts from the period, especially jewels (the originals are in the British Museum). The morning walk will be a circuit partly within Woodbridge then down towards Martelsham and finally returning to Woodbridge and the Tidemill along the riverside. After lunch we return to the coach for the short trip to Sutton Hoo where the short walkers can visit the burial mounds and exhibition centre. The long walkers will walk through the site towards the riverside opposite the Tidemill and then toward Bromwell, across the golf course and then back to Sutton Hoo, traversing a final rarity - heathland.

Coach, Walk and Visit to Ascott House,  near Leighton Buzzard

The morning walk (approx. 4.5 miles) starts from the village of Wing, arriving at Ascott in the early afternoon for our house and gardens visit. The tea room and shop will be open from 1 pm and the house and gardens from 2 pm.

Ascott House, a former hunting box dating back to the 16th century, is a Jacobean half-timbered manor house which was transformed by the Rothschild family towards the end of the 19th century. It contains a fine collection of paintings, furniture and oriental porcelain. It was donated to the National Trust in 1949 by Anthony de Rothschild but remains the countryside residence of the family. Anthony’s father Leopold, who inherited the property in 1879, and his wife Marie were both talented gardeners. Assisted by nurserymen James Veitch and Sons, they laid out the grounds in an unusual mix of formal and natural styles which include exuberant fountains, the Madeira Walk, a Dutch garden and a giant evergreen sundial. The garden is also remarkable for its many specimen trees.
